Plenty fast and not terribly expensive for a GB drive. Moving plugins from their default location is going to be painful and I don't think that's what causes "disk too slow" messages anyway.

I created some track stacks and thus reduced the amount of plug ins on some of the instruments and that made a difference. I know the Izotope Alloy mixing plugin is the culprit.
The hard drive system drive on your computer should be running your DAW software, and all the programs plug ins that work along with your DAW program. Those programs are written stored on the system drive, the internal drive of the computer you use. When those programs are running, they are in RAM. In general, don't record tracks on your system drive. Your external drives store the content of the files that you create with your software and plugins.
Those content files are in storage , not in memory. There's a distinction to be made. Files on the content drive are accessed by your computer, in packets of 1's and 0's, and are not being recalculated each time they are used to make a sound , they are simply being retrieved from a given location. Way back in the day, when we were running tape, we would always "print", or record, our effects from the session we were mixing, because you never knew for sure if you would have the same effects gear, sends, machines, in the same place at the same time again.
Same thing with the 2-track mix, backing it up on the master when possible was always a good idea. At some point in the life of a song recording , you must make the decision to print it. Commit it forever to disk, tape, whatever, so you can say that it is DONE.
Here is where I'm going with this: you can make a decision and say "hey, this is it, I'm going to turn this memory consuming waste of a virtual track into a simple 3 meg. Not saying this is your specific situation, but judging from some of the sessions I've been asked to "help" with That said, your external drive may well be too slow. Vcaster Member. For an external drive for a modest home studio UA Apollo Quad, iMac, Logic Pro X recording solo acoustic and ambient music or a classic rock power trio, what would you recommend?
You definitely need 1 TB drives for HD video editing, but not for audio, my biggest Logic sessions are only around 10 gig. I use Sandisk Extreme for video, both in my cameras and for editing. Same for audio. Knock on wood, I haven't had issues Messages Sounds like you need more ram not a different drive.
If you have a free internal drive bay, I'd invest there after upgrading your ram. Have system on one drive and your project files on another. Papanate said:. It might sound non intuitive - try unfreezing about half the tracks. Choose the ones that have the least amount of plugins and things. How many tracks are you running total? Which Version of Logic Pro are you using? You must log in or register to reply here.
And with the new iPhone 13 Pro Max, the video files are about to get even bigger. It's amazing what those tiny lenses can do. Personal Files - these are already on an external hard drive and I'm trying to consolidate them even further - tons of duplicates from various hard drives over the years. Might be about 1 TB of crap that I will reduce down further. My iMac had a 2 TB hard drive that was not full. One big decision I made was to use the iCloud Photo Library and then optimize on all of my devices.
Doing so freed up a chunk of space on my iMac. Right before my iMac died, I had a little over 1 TB used on my internal hard drive and I think it was mainly my Music collection and some of my Photos collection. Not sure how you control how much of the Photos library gets to reside on the internal hard drive when using the cloud and optimizing the drive.
It will be interesting to see what happens when I connect my new laptop to the iCloud Photo Library - how much space will it take up? Given that I would enjoy a good experience with Logic, maybe I will leave all of the Logic files on the internal hard drive. What I do with those is review a ton of videos, find the best moments, splice them together in iMovie and share online.
With this fancier laptop, I might even venture into using Final Cut Pro. Don - I am curious about "cheap SSDs". Do you consider this a cheap one, seeing that it is a low price for 2 TBs? I'm not even sure if I need one now but I'd like to know your opinion. With any external drive the truth will be with a test. Tech Specs are under perfect conditions and have wording like "up to Run the test for 5 - 10 minutes on 5 GB mode and that will tell you how the drive performs with a sustained write.
This is by no means an comprehensive test procedure for a drive but it will help to weed out drives that will most likely cause problems. Oct 23, AM. Question: Q: external hard drive for logic - new laptop! More Less. Community Get Support. Sign in Sign in Sign in corporate. Browse Search.

Will I be storing my Logic projects on the external hard drive as well? For the most part I play my keyboard using the sounds in Logic via midi and I occasionally record audio vocals. Not sure. Do I have to do anything special to relocate those to the external drive as well? My new Mac will have three Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Could you please recommend a good external hard drive for storing my personal files, my Music files and the Logic files?
Would something like the WD Ultra work fine? Or will I want something better? Can I continue using the 5 TB Ultra for my time machine backups backing up laptop and external drive or will I want something better? Any recommendations for a hub? Will Logic be fine working through a hub? Hubs used to be problematic ages ago with Macs. Reply I have this question too 3 I have this question too Me too 3 Me too.

Screaming fast latest and greatest is not necessary. Quality and reliability are critical as well as backup. I have a Belkin. My main external drive for music and video as well as my audio interface UAD connect directly to the computer. Hope this helps. Don [Edited by Moderator].
